I actually bought this bag to use as a diaper bag. I wanted something with a longer strap that didn't actually look like a froo-froo diaper bag. So I had the brilliant idea to look at cooler bags, so I can just toss in a bottle and it stays cool all day, along with makeup, a candy bar, and whatever my kids might throw in while I'm not looking. The side pockets are great for my cell phone, keys, and iPod, and it actually has 3 pockets on the front--one right above the logo, one zippered a few inches above that, and one at the top between the brown and orange fabrics.The top 2 are perfect for slipping in a file folder or letters to mail.
Having said that, I'm sure it would make a great normal cooler bag as well. It's about as wide as and a little longer than a 6-pack of soda, so it would work very well for picnics.Definitely a well-built, all-occasion tote!!
