Char-Broil M580 SS Quantum 4-Burner Infrared Gas Grill, Stainless Steel Review

Char-Broil M580 SS Quantum 4-Burner Infrared Gas Grill, Stainless SteelI was excited about the IR technology. It cooked fairly well. Then the burners started rusting. Char broil said it is not under warranty and said they would replace the parts for $100. Even the front doors on this grill showed rust and I covered it after every use. Very expensive throw away grill. I recommend you read their website about surface rust and rust warranty before buying.

Charbroil Chili Pepper Roaster Review

Charbroil Chili Pepper RoasterI bought this thinking it would be a useful item mainly because I eat so many peppers of all kinds. When I got it in the mail, I was disappointed to find that the holes in it will hold only the smallest of peppers. All the Jalepenos at the grocery store (and I went to 3 of them looking) were all too large to fit.Even my homegrown peppers are way too big, and end up just falling ofer spilling the fillings out all over the grill.I have spent some time filing out the holes which has helped somewhat, but basically these roasters are for serranos and other very small chiles.

Char-Broil 06701289 Charcoal Water Smoker Review

Char-Broil 06701289 Charcoal Water SmokerAs it comes out of the box, you will have a hard time keeping the temperature up into the cooking range (200 F) on this smoker, unless you add hot coals every 30 to 45 minutes. The problem is that the fire doesnot get enough oxygen with the fire pan provided. To increase air flow, Idrilled about 30 half-inch diameter holes in the bottom of my fire pan. Then, I bought a charcoal grate from Home Depot. I set on top of a 3 inchtall collar made of aluminum flashing that sits in the drilled out firepan. Many of the barbecue sites on the web have other detailedinstructions for modification of water smokers.
As the fire burns, ashwill drop through the fire grate into the fire pan.Eventually enough ashwill accumulate to block the air holes, so it is important to keep theseopen by poking a stick around to keep the air paths open.Be careful ofhot coals dropping from your smoker and starting a fire.I use a shallowpan filled with moist sand to protect my deck. Also, I heat up the waterto boiling on the stove before adding to my smoker. With thesemodifications, I can keep the fire in a reasonable temperature range byadding wood chunks and cold briquettes a few at a time.
I think a productshould work without the buyer having to extensively modify the equipment. However, very good barbecue can be produced on this unit after themodifications have been made.If you want to give smoking a try withoutinvesting much money and can make the necessary modifications, this unitwill work ok.If you want a water smoker and can invest $180, buy theWeber Smokey Mountain Smoker.I will probably buy a large smoker with anoffset fire box in a few years, but this one will work for now.

Char-Broil 463271309 M580 Quantum 4-Burner Infrared Gas Grill Review

Char-Broil 463271309 M580 Quantum 4-Burner Infrared Gas GrillWell, I have owned the four burner Quantum for one year now. I purchased it at Lowes for $450.00It's held up well, however, some shock adjustment was necessary, especially after the first few rains that it survived. It's kept covered, so I was in shock to see that the grates completely rusted after about a month on non-use and a few rain storms. However, the rust was only superficial, and cleaned off easily. All of the other exterior stainless steel does indeed stain if not kept relatively clean. Also, keep in mind that the tops of the side work tables and the cabinet base are not stainless steel, just painted with silver paint. While those surfaces have not rusted, any grease splatter left on the paint will permanently stain it.The thermometer on the hood was immediately rendered mostly useless by overnight dew after one nice summer night that the grill was not covered up.It still registers the last 1/3rd of the scale, but it's stuck 2/3rds of the way.Much of the silkscreened black printing, especially the safety instructions,on the bullnose of the grill have started to wipe off. There is some slight pitting of the chrome handle mounts on the lid, but no actual rust.

Regarding the performance.I almost NEVER clean the grates. It performs well even with stuff on the perforated infrared panel.I normally just preheat the grill for about 15 to 20 minutes, and most of what ever was previously there turns to ash.It still sears steaks beautifully after one year.

I made sure to contact Char-Broil within the warranty period to get replacement parts for ALL of the grates, the thermometer, and the lid handle.I should have also asked for a bullnose with readable silkscreening. So far the gill has performed very well. With regular cleaning and maintenance, the original grates will probably not rust through if they are regularly used.If the grill is not regularly used, the grates, and firebox will quickly rust away, probably within three to four years. However, with replacement parts, this grill should be serviceable for at least five to seven years. And, it will probably look reasonably good after that time.

It's not a "high-end" multi thousand dollar Stainless Steel grill that will become a family heirloom. For the $450 that I paid, including the in-warranty replacement parts received, it should last a reasonable amount of time, while still having the clean appearance of a Stainless Steel grill! But most importantly, it really does perform just as well as the multi thousand dollar grills.I have used Viking, DCS, Dynasty, and Ducane grills and this Char-Broil can do anything they can, (but it reaches searing temperature much faster and with better results)!

Char Broil Magnum 500 Quantum Infrared Three-Burner Gas Grill, with Sideburner Review

Char Broil Magnum 500 Quantum Infrared Three-Burner Gas Grill, with SideburnerI have always been a wood fire BBQ kind of guy - I like meat cooked over a *real* flame, and even charcoal has always seemed to me like cheating (though I've been using a charcoal Weber kettle for 20 years).I never even considered a gas grill for myself for these reasons.

For my senior Mom & Dad, however, the task of lighting charcoal, etc was too much hassle, so this past weekend I went out shopping for a gas grill for them. After going back and forth between three different home centers and Costco, I settled on this unit as by far the best "bang for the buck" in terms of build quality, performance characteristics, and ease of use for under $500.I seriously considered going up to the Weber Genesis, but for 50% more, I just couldn't quite justify it. My requirement was good quality for under $500.

After about a one-hour erector set project putting it all together (not difficult, just time consuming), I fired it up and let it burn off for about 20 minutes. I was immediately impressed with how hot the cooking surfaces became (and how quickly). The nifty temp sensors at the grate level registered 700+ degrees!

After burn-off, I tried it out with what I have found to be one of the trickiest things to grill over open flame (gas or wood/charcoal): raw marinated chicken parts. To be done right, the chicken has to be crispy on the outside - not burned, and moist and completely cooked on the inside. With unevenly shaped and sized chicken parts, this can be devilishly tricky.

But with this grill, I found I was able to keep the left most burner at full throttle, and the two right burners at low settings and get creative. This allowed me to beautifully sear the skin using the left side of the grill, then finish cooking on the right side (with the BBQ closed). The results were amazing.

One of my favorite things about this grill turned out to be that it is really easy to add wood chips for smoke flavor.Because there is a perforated metal "screen" (the infrared reflector) under the food, it catches the wood chips and holds them at a perfect smoking temperature where they will smolder but not flare up.

Speaking of flare-ups, this grill did NOT exhibit flare-ups at all.Even with fatty pieces of chicken that had been marinated in an olive oil mixture, there was almost no burning or smoking, even on the "searing" side of the hot grill.

When turned down low, I also found the evenness of the heating surface to be impressively consistent, and the large stainless "grill" surface not only made great marks on the food, but also did not stick as badly as most coated steel or iron grill surfaces do.

On the con side, I can imagine that the perforated screen is going to require some periodic maintenance to keep it clean. The good news is that it comes out in three easy-to-handle sections shaped like little trays, each holding a section of grill. You pull the "tray" up and out, then lift the grill surface out of the tray making both very easy to clean.

One final note - I also prepared a boneless leg of lamb on the grill using a "generic" rotisserie (Grill-Pro brand).it *barely* fit between the closed lid and the grill surface, but again, the infrared cooking system worked beautifully. I warmed it up at full throttle for about 5-10 minutes before mounting the marinated lamb roast, then allowed it to sear beautifully for about 15 minutes. Then I turned the burners all down to their lowest settings, threw on a thumb-sized stick of oak from one of our trees, and dropped the lid.

An hour and a half later, we enjoyed one of the best lamb roasts I have ever had!

Highly recommended, especially if you can get it for the price I paid (which was about $[...] less than Amazon's currently listed price)

Pros:
*Great heat output for searing
*Even distribution of heat for predictable results
*Good low-temp performance
*Easy to use wood chips for flavor
*Good build quality in the hood and firebox

Cons:
*Bottom 1/2 of construction is a bit flimsy, but better than many at this price point
*Requires pre-heating for about 10 minutes for best results
*Periodic clean-up probably required for optimum performance

Char Broil T480 Three-Burner 40,000 BTU Gas Grill, with Sideburner Review

Char Broil T480 Three-Burner 40,000 BTU Gas Grill, with SideburnerWhen I purchased the Char-Broil T480 3-Burner 40,000 BTU Gas Grill I did so for several reasons: features, reliability and price. For me the Char-Broil had more of what was important than any other grill I looked at.

Assembly:
On a difficulty rating I'd give this a 7 and I've put together everything from Bikes to Ikea Furniture. Out of the box this didn't scare me, but it did take about 45-60 minutes from start to finish.

Use & Features:
It has an electronic ignition for all of the burners. My only complaint so far is that the button is rubber and dried up very quickly from the heat. Mine detached from the grill, but still works as long as it doesn't get lost.
The warming rack although a great idea, hasn't really been useful to us. Even though it's raised up on the back portion of the grill it takes up too much space and makes getting to what is grilling beneath it very difficult.
The side burner is great for heating up sauces, baked beans, making grilled onions or even frying bacon.
Temperature gauge on outer front is useful. I'm not sure of accuracy, but it has helped me pre-heat the grill when I do things like tri-tip or beer can chicken.
The two wheels on the bottom make it easy for me to maneuver around on our deck and also for storing.

Grilling:
I used to be a firm believer of grilling only with briquettes, but when you want to do it as often as we do it's just not possible. During the summer we use the grill about 2-4 times a week and during the winter we still use it at least once a week.I have become very comfortable with this grill, knowing how long to preheat, how long to cook and what works best. The 3 separate burners allow me to heat only the grates we need. Most often it's one for just a small dinner, but we have had all three going when cooking for a large crowd.

Clean-Up:
After cooking I give the grates and initial scraping with the Mr. Bar-B-Q Wide Grill Brush and then I usually turn the burners I had been using up to HIGH for about 60 seconds. This seems to burn off any excess food and keeps it ready to go for next time. As long as you take care of this grill you should be able to get many years of service and delicious food from it!

Storing: We purchased a cover for it since we do have it out year round (and in rainy Seattle no less). This Weber 7555 Premium Cover, although not meant for our grill, has been our favorite one.The quality of the materials and weight of it have kept ours clean and covered even through some pretty bad storms. We figured it we were investing the money in a grill; we should invest in this too.
