Weber 2740001 Summit S-470 Grill, Propane, Stainless Steel Review

Weber 2740001 Summit S-470 Grill, Propane, Stainless SteelI started off looking at the TEC Infrared grills at around the $4k price range, after a while, I found I could get a similar grill from Fire Magic, for less money, so was about to go that route.I sent an e-mail to the people at Shopper's Choice, and asked some questions about Infrared grills in general. What I found out was very interesting, and kept me from buying the wrong grill.

It turns out, almost all infrared grills are only good for one thing, cooking steaks, and usually rare to medium rare in taste.I do not like my meat still mooing, so that was out of the question.About the only infrared grill that would allow you to cook other foods, and use other doneness levels, would be the TEC.This is because the TEC version can get down to around 300 degrees, where most other infrared grills have a low temp of only about 500-600 degrees. So, if you only like cooking steaks, then an infrared grill is for you.Otherwise, one of the Fire Magic grills would be a good choice, as you can get both infrared and conventional gas burners, but there is still one drawback to that, over this Weber model. That is, that if you need conventional burners for whatever you are cooking, the grill space over the infrared burner is wasted, and cannot be used for anything else.

After much looking around, and reading reviews of Weber grills (including the one already here on this grill), I decided I wanted one of the Summit grills.I decided on the 470 model, because 4 main burners was more than enough for what I wanted to do, and our family isn't huge, so the added space probably wouldn't get used. The reason I picked the higher end 4 burner model, was because I wanted the sear station, to get the effect of the infrared burner, without having to devote an entire burner to it.In my opinion, the lighted knobs are kind of a waste, however, I haven't needed to use them. The grill out light is kind of cool, and I've actually used it a few times now with good results.

I ordered this grill online (not through Amazon), and it arrived on a pallet, within a heavy cardboard box.Almost all of the main unit was already assembled, leaving the wings, and a few other things to install.I think it took me less than an hour to assemble the entire unit, once I got it off the pallet. This grill is heavy, around 300-350lbs, so it is a lot easier if you have a couple people to get it out of the packaging.

I was really impressed with the quality of the parts. All of the burners, flame tamers, and grates are made out of stainless steel, so they should last the life of the grill (which I expect to be 20 years or more). One of the more cool features of this grill, is the smoker box. This is something that did not even come with the higher-end grills, until you stepped up to the $6k or more grills. The smoker box is all stainless steel, and has its own burner on the very right side of the grill. It takes up little grilling space, which is nice.I've used it several times, and it seems to work pretty well.Controlling the amount of smoke is as easy as turning a knob.

On to the cooking. This grill is fantastic at cooking. You get those perfect sear marks on everything you cook, and the flavor is outstanding. One thing I would point out here, is if you think you really know how to grill, get the cook book by Jamie Purviance, called Weber's Real Grilling (bought here on Amazon for less than $17, 75 reviews at 5 stars), and you will really learn how to grill. It is amazing some of the things I used to do to try and make things taste better, only to learn it was the wrong thing to do.A lot of people I have seen grilling, do it the WRONG way, so I'd highly recommend this book, not only does it teach you the proper technique, it has some fantastic recipes in it (not just meat, either--my wife and I are fans of the Barbecue Chicken Pizzas--yes, on the grill pizza, and the Apple Cake).

The grill is fantastic at everything so far.I have not tried the rotisserie yet, but everything else works really well. The burner lighting system is great, basically like using a flame thrower to light the burner, so you don't have to sit there and keep sparking the igniter all the time (oh, and the igniter is nice, it's built-in to the knob, you don't push another button or anything, just turn the knob to light, and hold it for a second or two, and you're good to go.This grill is capable of getting very HOT.The first time I used it to make a couple steaks, with the sear burner on, I burned all the hair off of my right hand, just opening the grill cover!I did the same thing a few weeks later, until I learned my lesson--get longer grilling tools! The knobs regulate well, and the burners seem to cook evenly.

Overall, I'm really impressed with this grill.I would buy it again, without a second thought. It sure beats the Patio Caddy I had, up until I got this one. This grill does seem to go through the gas a little faster, but then again, it has more than one burner...I ordered the Weber grill cover that goes with this grill last week, because I noticed that even under a covered porch, the grill does get pretty dirty.

Weber Summit Gold D6 Stainless Steel Natural Gas Grill Review

Weber Summit Gold D6 Stainless Steel Natural Gas GrillI have owned my Weber Summit Gold A6 Natural Gas model since last November, and I could not be happier with it.A little about me first.I am a former chef, having trained in France and worked in some of the finest steak houses in Southern California for several years.Although I now work in a different job, my wife is a personal chef, and I often help her with jobs, usually cooking on the Weber.

We formerly owned a Weber Genesis, and while it performed alright, I never felt it got hot enough for my liking. Not so the Summit Gold.Mine has always lit easily, rises to the 700 degree range within minutes, and has sufficient sensitivity to be turned down to under 300 degrees for cooking lighter items such as shrimp. But let's face it, steaks are what are best on a grill, and I enjoy the fact that this grill heats to an appropriate temperature to quickly sear the outside while leaving the inside tender and juicy. We have also grilleda variety of styles of chicken, fish (salmon, trout, catfish, swordfish, etc.), and vegetables, all with great results. On Thanksgiving, we used the indirect method (i.e., side burners on, middle burners off) to cook two turkeys (the most popular being the one with garlic and chili powder rubbed outside and stuffed with chopped tamales inside), and both came out tender and juicy in under 4 hours.

Two things to be mindful of.First, if you buy a propane model, know that propane burns hotter than natural gas, so you may have some adjustments in cooking times, etc.And second, if you cook a lot on the grill like we do (2-4 times a week), you need to keep the grill clean. This means every few weeks, emptying the grease catch, scraping down the flavorizer bars, removing the ash build up in the bottom, and cleaning the grease from the sides and lid.Any barbeque will require this kind of cleaning for optimum performance, but the effort is definitely worth it.

This grill has well exceeded our expectations, and with its 25 year warranty, we expect to be using it for years to come.

Weber 6840001 Genesis Gold B Natural Gas, Stainless Steel Review

Weber 6840001 Genesis Gold B Natural Gas, Stainless SteelI had to cancel my order when Amazon kept pushing my delivery date back. I still bought the genesis gold B from my local hardware store. It cooks great and has all the features I was looking for. It heats up and is ready to cook in a couple of minutes.

I upgraded to the gold because the grill, flavorizer bars ( those things the juice drips on and gives the flavor to the meat) and burners are stainless steel instead of porcelin coated steel.I really like having a second side table instead of side burner.

Product Description:
When we launched the Genesis gas grill line back in 1985, we launched more than a new line of grills- we launched a grilling revolution. The Genesis line changed the way gas grills work with a new and innovative cooking system that stopped flare-ups and created even heat without messy lava rocks. Our system was so good, it wasn't long before other brands tried to replicate it.Close, but no cigar.Weber's cooking system is still the best on the market, and here's why:Burneres made of high-grade stainless steel run the length of the cookbox, providing even heat accross the grill.--Flavorizer bars completely cover the burners, no holes or cutouts. They are precisely angled to generate heat and facilitate run off of juices that aren't vaporized. --A drip system for directing grease away from the burners.Drippings are channeled into a funnel shaped bottom tray under the burners and collect in a large drip pan. Both the funnel-shaped tray and the drip pan are easy to remove from the front of the grill.--At least two or more individually controlled burners for cooking direct or indirect.Burners have infinite control valves so you can fine tune the temperature.Genesis Gold gas grills include two model types--B and C. Gold B models have three burners, and Gold C models have three burners and a12,000 BTU-per-hour input side burner. Both models feature a fully enclosed cart with stainless steel doors and handles, stainless steel cooking grates, stainless steel flavorizer bars, granite-style thermoset work surfaces, Crossover ignition system, solid robot-welded carts, built in thermometer, and a double-walled construction stainless steel hood that adds a layer of insulation to trap heat and protect the stainless steel hood from discoloring. All natural gas models include a 12 ft. flexible hose. All models also feature a limited lifetime warranty.

GENESIS EP-310 BLACK NAT Review

GENESIS EP-310 BLACK NATThis review is for the Weber S-310, the stainless steel version of the E-310, with SS grates and flavor bars like the EP-310. (I got the natural gas version. It comes with the hose already attached, plus the brass coupler.) The front, shelves, and hood are SS. The sides of the hood and shelves are gray aluminum, and the sides and back are gray painted steel. All the parts are of a high quality. Note: The newest S model has a frame around the front doors, not the solid front as shown in the Amazon picture. I prefer the cleaner looking solid front, but this version makes it have the same look and production across the Genesis line.

Everything comes very safely and securely packaged in a large box with lots of cardboard and plastic bags. The various nuts and bolts are in several separate packages. Most of the stainless steel is covered with a rubbery coating that is fairly easily removed. I suggest using a cloth to hold the part being stripped since the SS is a fingerprint magnet. The instructions are mostly pictures, often small. It is easy to make a mistake that can cause a problem further down the assembly. For instance, the clips that have a nut attached should always face the inside of whatever they are being attached to. The four wheels have two that lock. Those two should be placed in the front so they can be reached.

The instructions show two people lifting the top unit out of the box. One can do it if you remove the hood first. Simply remove the retaining bolts and put the hood aside. Next, remove all the parts packed inside the top unit. What is left is easy to lift. You can also slice down the edges of the box with a shop knife and lay the sides flat for easier access. Make sure you have lots of clean flat space in which to work, such as your driveway. Carefully lay all the parts out for easy access and identification.

Use a 7/16" socket wrench for most bolts. One bolt is 11mm, though. The included wrench is very impractical, and is only needed to adjust the front doors to square. You will need a #1 and a #2 Phillips screwdriver for the screws. A power drill will work, but carefully set the torque. Putting it together took me over 2 hours. The excellent design virtually assures proper assembly. After hooking up to the natural gas line, I turned the unit on high. The first burner has the electric spark so it should be opened first. The knobs may feel a bit loose, but that is because they are attached to springy gas regulators. The push-button spark generator is quite effective. To test, and to clean the interior, I let it heat up to 650 degrees - much hotter than my previous grill could ever go. It did so rather quickly, and could have kept going! (The thermometer goes up to 700 degrees.) At that high temperature, the hood handle remained relatively cool, except at the very sides, where it was a little warm. Opening the hood sends out a blast of hot air. You can then appreciate having the control knobs placed well to the side instead of on the front.

The warranty is the best in the business. The parts quality assures full utilization of that warranty, justifying the higher initial cost. It reminds me of another industry leader, Anderson Windows and Doors. There is simply no substitute for the best of something.

Weber 1780001 Summit S-650 Propane Grill, Stainless Steel Review

Weber 1780001 Summit S-650 Propane Grill, Stainless SteelThis is my fourth gas grill which replaces a very expensive stainless "Turbo" unit I bought from Barbecues Galore about eight years ago. That Turbo started out fine, but steadily deteriorated to the point where I didn't even want to fire it up anymore. The quality of materials and workmanship on the Weber Summit S-650 is top shelf.Every detail is well thought-out and executed, including the burner system, high-end side burner, LP tank weight guage, heavy guage stainless grills, jet ignition system, separate smoker box and burner, drip tray system, massive lid, and LED grill-out lights that really work.I've only owned the Summit for a short time, but everything I've grilled so far has turned out perfectly. The six burners and large cooking area make it possible to cook for a large party, but also provide more options for indirect cooking.Want more heat without increased gas usage?Turn on the burners closer to the food. It's brilliant.Perhaps the best features are the flavorizer bars and grease drip system. They virtually guarantee no flare-ups on fatty foods like burgers and chicken quarters, which was a constant source of frustration with my previous grill. The grease hits the flavorizer bars and disappears into a poof of smoke. What misses the flavorizer bars hits the full width slanted grease tray that terminates into an aluminum catch pan.Clean and easy to manage with zero flare-ups and no charred food.

I really can't say enough good things about this grill and I can't think of a single negative to write about. While the Summit S-650 may seem expensive at first glance, it compares very favorably to grills costing 4x as much. With the Summit, you don't get what you pay for...you get much more.Is it possible to love a grill?:-)

Masterbuilt 7 In 1 Smoker And Grill Review

Masterbuilt 7 In 1 Smoker And GrillI just used mine for the first time.It went together pretty easily.Today was probably the worst day for smoking and it worked quite well.Despite the weather alternating between sunny and rain/sleet with a high of 40 I was able to keep it right at 200 degrees with relatively little tweaking, especially considering this was my first time smoking. The only exception was a brief spike when it ran out of water. It was pretty gusty and I did initially have a hard time keeping it lit until I set up a little wind break.I think that was more a case of me picking a bad weather day but it may be a concern in someplace that is often windy.I was able to smoke a 5lb pork loin in 5 and half hours and it tasted great! As good as any restaurant.I highly recommend this smoker.

Char-Broil Patio Caddie Gas Grill Review

Char-Broil Patio Caddie Gas GrillConsider this a long term test.I bought my Patio Caddie out of desperation when another cheap grille died one nice summer Saturday with friends coming over for dinner.I simply wasn't in a mood to spend $400 or $500 for a king kong unit.
What makes a good grille is really simple: it must start every time (it does), it must generate enough heat to cook (it does, but keeping the cover on helps)and it must have high quality grids (it does). On the last point, and what really sets the Patio Caddie Apart, are the heavy porcelainized grids. The are wonderful to cook on, easy to clean, haven't sagged in 5 years use.
Consider this the Honda Civic of grills: I fill the mini-tank once or twice a year for $7 and cook at least once a week year round (in Seattle, no less). It is absolutely the finest chicken cooking device I have ever seen and easily cooks dinner for 4 to 6.No it won't handle a 10 Lb salmon in one shot or cook a dozen burgers for a tribal reunion. And a Honda Civic wont carry an entire NFL team at one time either.
The only downside is that the heat output does become limited below 50 degrees, but that's a function of the propane, not the grill itself.
If you live in a condo or apartment with a small deck, if you're on a budget, or want a portable unit look no further, this is it.
I will be moving on to a bigger and better grille in a couple weeks, and believe it or not, I have a friend who wants my old patio caddie for her condo.Old, greasy and well used, it still has life in it, and she knows how well it cooks.I just hope my new, bigger grille works as well.

Weber 9890 Gas Barbecue Rotisserie Review

Weber 9890 Gas Barbecue RotisserieWhen I see an item with 1 star, it tells me that item is really bad and to avoid it at all costs. The reviewer stated that the EZ-Que was a better rotisserie, but otherwise had nothing to say about the Weber.

I agree the EZ-Que is a novel and well made piece of equipment, which sells for a lot more money than the Weber rotisserie. The cradle/cage design is easier to load than a traditional spit, and anyone who wants to spend $130 for one is encouraged to get theirs.

(Note: EZ-Que supplies Weber with their cradles, which Weber sells under their own brand name with the Weber motor for $90; substantially less than EZ-Que's price. You can get it here on Amazon if you prefer that style to the traditional spit.)

I have 2 Weber rotiserries, one for the gas grill, one for the kettle. And while I agree the EZ-Que cradles are a better design, the Weber spits are well made and do a good job.The mounting on a Genesis is good and secure. The materials are good. The spit is solid feeling, the counterbalance is nicely made, the motor works well.I can fit 2 whole chickens on the spit and the motor doesn't strain to turn them. The tines that hold the food are large and strong. The food cooked on a rotisserie is delicious.

One reviewer complained about the cord length.Yes, the cord is just a pigtail. You need an extension cord.

Anyways, the Weber is a good rotisserie and I am giving it 4 stars. The 1-star reviewer was off the mark.

Traeger Industries, Inc. BBQ070 Pellet Grill Review

Traeger Industries, Inc. BBQ070 Pellet GrillMy Lil Tex (075 model) is now over our years old and has had some heavy use. The first two years, I couldn't stop cooking in it. I have since settled down to be a once or twice a week all seasons cooker.
The indirect cooking created by the barrel-shaped oven, the even heat and the use of wood food grade pellets make for some delicious meats and veggies. I won't go into the debate over pellets vs propane vs charcoal. Everyone's got their own opinion and tastes.
This review is not about the cooking but the overall quality and cost.
A disclaimer: I used to work for a retailer that sold Traeger's. I was the in-store expert on cooking and selling these units. When we first picked up the brand, I knew that spending $700 on a barbeque was outrageous. Then the company rep came around, did some demos in front of the store, and after trying chicken, pork roast, salmon and even acorn squash andother veggies, I was sold on the flavor ofeverything that can be cooked on a Traeger pellet grill.
Granted, I got a 30% discount from the company, but I still think the $700 retailprice was fair, considering the results. Oftentimes, retailers have the 075 unit on sale for around $650.
It didn't take me long to become an expert on how to cook, barbeque and smoke with this grill. I had used a Weber Silver B propane barbeque for several years before this and I still believe that unit is outstanding. I wish I had kept it. It's easier and faster to BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs on a fast-heating propane flame than the slower heating wood pellet grills. I know wood pellet lovers have their rebuttals for this, but in my opinion, quick and easy means propane. I have supplemented my Traeger with a Weber Q series table top grill for hot dog days.
Who needs wood-flavored smoky taste on a hot dog, anyway? Just cook it, I say.
Now to the quality. My Lil Tex (075) is U.S. made, just down the road in Mt. Angel, Oregon where the Traeger thing all started. After four years of very heavy use, the auger motor and the 3-speed thermostat went under. The auger motor cost about $65 from a Traeger vendor in McMinnvile, OR. I got the thermostat from a dealer in West Linn, Oregon at a close out price of twenty bucks. Considering the amount of use I've put the unit through, it held up well. What a lot of people don't realize is that this is a sophisticated piece of electronic equipment that sits outside, usually uncovered in all types of weather.
(As I am writing this, a whole chicken is cooking on the 075, a half and hour on high and then 45 minutes to an hour on smoke. It's cold outside, about 45degrees, and cooking time is a bit longer than normal.)
A bit about pellets; there are many flavors of Traeger wood pellets from oak and mesquite to "sweet" pellets like maple and cherry. I use so many spices and marinades on the stuff I cook that I simply cannot tell the difference. Garlic pellets smell a lot different than mesquite while cooking, but honestly, I can't tell the difference in the final product. Get them on sale. Most vendors have specials from time to time, three bags for the price of two, etc., otherwise, you can expect to pay about $15 per 20# bag.
As for quality of the unit itself---I figure what I paid for replacement parts mentioned earlier is justified, considering the heavy use the unit gets and the superior taste of everything I cook or smoke on it.
Now to the China Syndrome.
If the legs on a Traeger are bolted rather than welded, it's Chinese. I assembled a few China Traegers before I left my retail company and it was disheartening when I had to add my own home-made shims to make the unit stable and not wobbly. Other than assembly, I have no experience with these units but have read negative reviews regarding the quality of the electrical components. Indeed, the West Linn, OR. company that sold me the replacement 3-speed thermostat have given up on Traeger and now sell another brand of pellet cooker.
Bottom line for me--my Traeger has cooked up the best food I've ever eaten from an outdoor or indoor cooker of any kind. I highly recommend the unit that's smoking away in my back yard right now. As for the newer foreign built models, I say ask around if you can about the quality--maybe they've improved. Check the warranty. It used to be a pretty good one. And check the dealers. Make sure they're happy with what they're selling and will help you with any warranty issues.
That's it. Good luck.

Old Smokey Electric Smoker Review

Old Smokey Electric SmokerSometimes, I tell myself sternly, you don't *have* to get obsessed. I could have spent a lot more money for a smoker, but I wasn't sure that I'm committed to this kind of cooking. The Old Smokey was our compromise between the really cheap, rickety smokers we saw in the hardware store and the "serious" models that cost over $200. And it was the right choice.

After using it three or four times, I'm really glad I chose this model. The operation is simple, and the equipment was put together without cussing. The workmanship is good; this thing won't fall apart.

I had a friend sneer at our choice of an *electric* smoker, but nobody has complained about the food that came out of it. Its convenience can't be beat: we plugged it in outside, and we could walk away. I didn't have to worry about running out of propane or loading up more charcoal. (Of course, we _didn't_ walk away... we came back ever so often to mop the brisket. But I didn't have to fuss.)

The smoker has two shelves, each of which (I can say assertively) can easily hold a 10-pound shoulder of pork or an 8-pound brisket. It's a good size, does the job it advertises, and it's made well. I'd buy it again.

Weber 2780001 Summit S-670 Grill, Propane, Stainless Steel Review

Weber 2780001 Summit S-670 Grill, Propane, Stainless SteelThis is one solid grill. The panels, grates, double walled cabinet doors, side shelves all are robust in materials and design. The assembly was minimal, I had it together in 15 minutes. At first I thought the handle lamps and lighted panel were gimmick, but actually are very functional. At 70K BTU, this grill packs a mean punch. It zoomed up to 700'F in less than 10min, so cleaning this afterwards is a breeze. My first use were two 2lb chickens on the rotisserie; the S-670 performed gallantly. If I were to pick a weak spot, it would be the caster wheels; they are a bit on the light-duty side especially when compared with the rest of the grill. I suggest registering warranty by phone, the customer service rep will share with you use and care instructions not as obvious in the manual.
