Char-Broil Patio Caddie Gas Grill Review

Char-Broil Patio Caddie Gas GrillConsider this a long term test.I bought my Patio Caddie out of desperation when another cheap grille died one nice summer Saturday with friends coming over for dinner.I simply wasn't in a mood to spend $400 or $500 for a king kong unit.
What makes a good grille is really simple: it must start every time (it does), it must generate enough heat to cook (it does, but keeping the cover on helps)and it must have high quality grids (it does). On the last point, and what really sets the Patio Caddie Apart, are the heavy porcelainized grids. The are wonderful to cook on, easy to clean, haven't sagged in 5 years use.
Consider this the Honda Civic of grills: I fill the mini-tank once or twice a year for $7 and cook at least once a week year round (in Seattle, no less). It is absolutely the finest chicken cooking device I have ever seen and easily cooks dinner for 4 to 6.No it won't handle a 10 Lb salmon in one shot or cook a dozen burgers for a tribal reunion. And a Honda Civic wont carry an entire NFL team at one time either.
The only downside is that the heat output does become limited below 50 degrees, but that's a function of the propane, not the grill itself.
If you live in a condo or apartment with a small deck, if you're on a budget, or want a portable unit look no further, this is it.
I will be moving on to a bigger and better grille in a couple weeks, and believe it or not, I have a friend who wants my old patio caddie for her condo.Old, greasy and well used, it still has life in it, and she knows how well it cooks.I just hope my new, bigger grille works as well.

Traeger Industries, Inc. BBQ070 Pellet Grill Review

Traeger Industries, Inc. BBQ070 Pellet GrillMy Lil Tex (075 model) is now over our years old and has had some heavy use. The first two years, I couldn't stop cooking in it. I have since settled down to be a once or twice a week all seasons cooker.
The indirect cooking created by the barrel-shaped oven, the even heat and the use of wood food grade pellets make for some delicious meats and veggies. I won't go into the debate over pellets vs propane vs charcoal. Everyone's got their own opinion and tastes.
This review is not about the cooking but the overall quality and cost.
A disclaimer: I used to work for a retailer that sold Traeger's. I was the in-store expert on cooking and selling these units. When we first picked up the brand, I knew that spending $700 on a barbeque was outrageous. Then the company rep came around, did some demos in front of the store, and after trying chicken, pork roast, salmon and even acorn squash andother veggies, I was sold on the flavor ofeverything that can be cooked on a Traeger pellet grill.
Granted, I got a 30% discount from the company, but I still think the $700 retailprice was fair, considering the results. Oftentimes, retailers have the 075 unit on sale for around $650.
It didn't take me long to become an expert on how to cook, barbeque and smoke with this grill. I had used a Weber Silver B propane barbeque for several years before this and I still believe that unit is outstanding. I wish I had kept it. It's easier and faster to BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs on a fast-heating propane flame than the slower heating wood pellet grills. I know wood pellet lovers have their rebuttals for this, but in my opinion, quick and easy means propane. I have supplemented my Traeger with a Weber Q series table top grill for hot dog days.
Who needs wood-flavored smoky taste on a hot dog, anyway? Just cook it, I say.
Now to the quality. My Lil Tex (075) is U.S. made, just down the road in Mt. Angel, Oregon where the Traeger thing all started. After four years of very heavy use, the auger motor and the 3-speed thermostat went under. The auger motor cost about $65 from a Traeger vendor in McMinnvile, OR. I got the thermostat from a dealer in West Linn, Oregon at a close out price of twenty bucks. Considering the amount of use I've put the unit through, it held up well. What a lot of people don't realize is that this is a sophisticated piece of electronic equipment that sits outside, usually uncovered in all types of weather.
(As I am writing this, a whole chicken is cooking on the 075, a half and hour on high and then 45 minutes to an hour on smoke. It's cold outside, about 45degrees, and cooking time is a bit longer than normal.)
A bit about pellets; there are many flavors of Traeger wood pellets from oak and mesquite to "sweet" pellets like maple and cherry. I use so many spices and marinades on the stuff I cook that I simply cannot tell the difference. Garlic pellets smell a lot different than mesquite while cooking, but honestly, I can't tell the difference in the final product. Get them on sale. Most vendors have specials from time to time, three bags for the price of two, etc., otherwise, you can expect to pay about $15 per 20# bag.
As for quality of the unit itself---I figure what I paid for replacement parts mentioned earlier is justified, considering the heavy use the unit gets and the superior taste of everything I cook or smoke on it.
Now to the China Syndrome.
If the legs on a Traeger are bolted rather than welded, it's Chinese. I assembled a few China Traegers before I left my retail company and it was disheartening when I had to add my own home-made shims to make the unit stable and not wobbly. Other than assembly, I have no experience with these units but have read negative reviews regarding the quality of the electrical components. Indeed, the West Linn, OR. company that sold me the replacement 3-speed thermostat have given up on Traeger and now sell another brand of pellet cooker.
Bottom line for me--my Traeger has cooked up the best food I've ever eaten from an outdoor or indoor cooker of any kind. I highly recommend the unit that's smoking away in my back yard right now. As for the newer foreign built models, I say ask around if you can about the quality--maybe they've improved. Check the warranty. It used to be a pretty good one. And check the dealers. Make sure they're happy with what they're selling and will help you with any warranty issues.
That's it. Good luck.

All natural wood pellets are poured into the hopper. When you push the On switch, the hot rod activates for about 4 minutes, igniting the pellets in the firepot. The auger automatically feeds pellets from the hopper to the firepot where convection air is added, acting like a miniature forge. Heat and wood smoke surround the food, resulting in fantastic taste. Drippings are channeled out of the cooking chamber into an external bucket for easy disposal. Flipping the 3 position switch to High allows you to grill. On Medium you can slow cook. Brinkmann 810-5304-4 Smoke'N Grill Electric Smoker and Grill, Stainless Steel Review

Brinkmann 810-5304-4 Smoke'N Grill Electric Smoker and Grill, Stainless SteelIt's really a pretty smoker...but I don't know if it works or not...there are missing parts.

This must be a common problem for Brinkman...as they have in bold lettering, "for missing parts, call customer service at 1-800-xxx-xxxx).I've called the number several times. They should call it "customer dis-service", because you don't talk to anyone, you listen to some recordings, punch in your telephone number, and they'll call you back when they get around to it. It's been over a day and I've not heard anything.I hope that when/if they do call, I'm not in the shower or otherwise occupied.

If/when I get the call, I'll edit my review.I hope i get those parts before Thanksgiving...i was planning on smoking a turkey.

Thanks Brinkman!

UPDATE:I finally received a call...but of course I was in the shower and couldn't take it.They left a voicemail suggesting I visit their website which I had already done and found no help.I looked up their corporate number on the 'net. The receptionist put me through to customer service...supposedly on hold with a live person. As I was waiting, I received an e-mail stating the missing parts would be mailed tomorrow. No "I'm sorry for your inconvienence" or anything.

I wonder if Brinkmann's CEO ever reads these?or their shareholders?I believe I'd want to know if my customer service team was failing.

Char-Griller 4000 Grillin' Pro Gas Grill Review

Char-Griller 4000 Grillin' Pro Gas GrillSomeone does need to rewrite the instructions as they are somewhat vague, although if someone has common sense he can figure it out. The most that needs improving is at the start with the legs. If one slips the leg cross bars on, then he can see which holes to use when attaching the legs. Also when installing the wheels, use a small block of wood and hammer to get on properly. When ready for the grill body I tightened up all the bolts on the stand as they will be much easier to reach and much lighter to tip upside down. All the rest was pretty good except the ignighter wires, they need a needle nose pliers to get them on (they are very tight and could bend them or not get them on at all or loose and fall off later)
I really like the ignighter on each burner, and lights so well and effortlessly with being battery operated. Assembly was a little over and hour and wasnt to bad. Be sure to check the gas lines as I had a loose nut that just needed tightening.
The grilling is the best part as having 4 burners means you havenice even heat with no cold spots. I mostly cooked on low or a little higher and temp still was at 450. I would recomend lightly coating the inside to season the grill. Also i would use cooking oil every other time on the grates to prevent sticking.
The Salmon and Pork chops came out great on my first try so I think this grill will be a pleasure to use.I did order this at char griller website for $199. plus $80. shippingChar-Griller 4000 Grillin' Pro Gas Grill

Grill Daddy GB91062S Grill Cleaning Tool Review

Grill Daddy GB91062S Grill Cleaning ToolMy wife is always looking for ways to make me more helpful around the house. She knows I hate to clean the grill even though I use it a lot.I got tired of buying steel brushes to clean the grill and have them all gummed up in a few weeks. She bought me the Grill Daddy and I finally got around to trying it and it works pretty good. You have to turn the grill on high and you load the Grill Daddy with about a cup of water and you go to work. The water on the hot grill turns to steam and it got my grill looking like new. Now, it didn't help me with all the other cleaning that I had to do on my Webber gas grill.I still have to spend a Saturday afternoon taking care of all that is below the grill. However, I know I can get the grill clean in a relatively short period of time.I only used it once and I know it came with an extra set of brushes but I don't think that these brushes will gum up all that soon.(Especially since I don't clean the grill that often). However, I couldn't help but see all the gunk on the grill fall away into the drop pan rather than sticking to the brush.

Brinkmann 810-7080-6 Gourmet Electric Smoker and Grill, Black Review

Brinkmann 810-7080-6 Gourmet Electric Smoker and Grill, BlackI ordered this item for my parents and had it sent directly to their house. After they had it mostly assembled, they realized the grill top has a dent in it and the water pan is dented and looks like it has been re-painted in places.Overall, the grill is still functional, but I am very disappointed to receive a damaged item (obviously not shipping damage) that was sold as NEW but looks more to be a fefurb..

Brinkmann 810-5301-6 Smoke'N Grill Charcoal Smoker and Grill, Black Review

Brinkmann 810-5301-6 Smoke'N Grill Charcoal Smoker and Grill, BlackAlthough, I have to use more charcoal than recommended amd some work is required to assemble, it still deserves 5 stars. It won't cook hot enough without a nearly full basin of charcoal, at the start.I do understand that smokers cook at lower temps, but it's just too slow without a good amount of charcoal. Cheapo charcoal doesn't work so well with this one, unless you are cooking burgers, steaks or hot dogs only. This is especially true if you are cooking a lot of meat and using both racks. I like having the nice size door because it's possible to turn over the meat you are slow smoking (with a very long tong) on the second rack, without having to remove the lid and the top cooking rack, but in doing so, you really need to be careful. If needed, you can use the door to add more charcoal/woodchips. The reason this grill is my all time favorite; the meat gets so tender, and there's no burn char. It browns and gets a delicious color, nice smokey flavor, but no burned areas. No charcoal residue gets on your meat.I don't use a water pan. This is a slow way to cook, but you don't have to constantly watch over your meat. I find when I get a good, even smoke going, only have to turn the meat once.Really, I can go cook my side dishes without running out to check on the meat every 10 minutes.Flare ups are rare. Healthy size slabs of ribs takes about 3 1/2 hours to cook. Best to cook burgers and hot dogs first, as soon as the charcoal is ready, without the lid on...after they are done, I put on the ribs and let them slow smoke.

I don't know where they get that 50 lbs of meat from. Each rack holds approx., 1 large St Louis style ribs with tip attached or 2 baby back slabsor 2 chickens or 5 nice size steaks. It will smoke a 12 to 18 pound turkey and each rack will easily hold 3 lbs of hot dogs or sausage or 10 midsize burgers.
UPDATE: I can attest, this smoker cooks up tender, moist and....evenly cooked meats, without vents. Never a need to place your meat into a low temp oven to finish cooking and tender up.No. The meat is lip smacking good, evenly cooked, beautiful color, and tender moist, right off this smoker. It's delicious. It has an open bottom area for the charcoal pan. The pan covers the bottom of the smoker. The smoke rises up through your meat. It does not escape out of the bottom. Once the charcoal is well ashed over and burned down some, you will not have flareups as long as the lid is properly fitted down into the barrel.

I add about 5 briquettes for every 1 1/2 hours of smoking, for the amount I cook. I start bone down and only, turn my meat once. You don't have to monitor temps. It's not necessary. Once you get a good smoke going, this smoker holds it's temp. With experience, you begin to know how many briquettes to add for the amount of meat you are smoking. Old fashioned, Kingsford's charcoal and water soaked wood chips, works best. Matchlight is convenient, but it burns too fast and you can't use it as "add to" charcoal because of the lighter fluid infused into it.

The only person I would not recommend this smoker for....someone that wants to cook up a lot of meat at one time. It doesn't handle a lot of meat, very well. I wish the cooking grate was 22", but it's closer to 18"It is not as durable as Weber's Smokey Mountain, but it's also about 1/5 the price. I'm just replacing mine. It never developed any inside rust, just a little on the outside after 13 years and I was not nice to my smoker. With care, this Brinkmann's will last a good 15 years. It's constructed of a heavier gauge steel. Over time, the thermometer may fall out, unless you seal it. I never paid attention to the temp readings anyway ( I focus on how my charcoal is burning) and when mine fell out, I plugged the area with aluminum foil. My father was real old school. His, was an open grill was on a tripod; no lid,no hood, no vents, or thermometer. All he had was a spray bottle for flare ups, a big basting brush and some heavy duty foil. He'd sit there and baby that meat for hours and clamp a foil tent over the entire, meat filled, grate. His, were some of the smoked best ribs you'd ever sink your teeth into.

Brinkmann 852-7080-6 Gourmet Charcoal Smoker and Grill, Green Review

Brinkmann 852-7080-6 Gourmet Charcoal Smoker and Grill, GreenI love this smoker.I did have experience with a genuine Cookin Cajin from the company Brinkman purchased. It was a little more heavy-duty, but as far as results go, the Brinkmann is every bit as good.Assembly proved to be slightly annoying. The screws and nuts were tiny and difficult to thread and the main cylinder was slightly out of round.Once assembled, however, the performance is excellent.I've used it a dozen times already, with very tastey results.

Brinkmann 810-5305-6 Smoke'N Grill Charcoal Smoker and Grill, Stainless Steel Review

Brinkmann 810-5305-6 Smoke'N Grill Charcoal Smoker and Grill, Stainless Steel11/23/09 - RUN AWAY!!!I wish I could change my rating. The smoker doesn't even attempt to be a little airtight.I used a half bag of charcoal smoking a small chicken.I bought a $60 smoker that works MUCH better and still works as a grill. Now I won't go broke buying charcoal.

The smoker works well as a smoker and as a grill but I am disappointed in the thickness of the "stainless steel."It's basically sheet metal, and thin at that.(The picture makes the item look more substanial) And the heat has altered the stainless steel look somewhat.A painted version would be better. So the functionality is good but I feel I paid too much at ~$142.The one other item I dislike about it is that you have to add coals through a small door while smoking.Others I have used allow one to lift off the top and drop them in.Basically I'm just trying to prove to myself that I will smoke and grill a lot before I drop $750 for a Green Egg.I'd stick to the cheaper non-stainless model if I was going to try it again.
